Chlamydia infection is a common STD that can infect both men and women. It can cause serious and permanent damage to the reproductive system of a woman and make it more difficult or impossible to become pregnant in the future. Chlamydia can also cause ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus) which can be fatal.
Most people who have chlamydia have no symptoms. If you have symptoms, you may not appear for several weeks after you have had sex with an infected person. Even when they do not cause symptoms, chlamydia can damage your reproductive system.
Women with symptoms may notice the following:
abnormal vaginal discharge;burning sensation when urinating.
Symptoms in men include the following:
discharge from the penis; burning sensation when urinating; pain and swelling of one or both testicles (although this is less common).
Men and women can also become infected by chlamydia in the rectum, either through receptive anal sex or spread from another infected part (as the vagina). Although these infections usually cause no symptoms, they can cause:
- rectal pain;
- secretions;
- bleeding.
It should be checked by a doctor if you notice any of these symptoms or if your partner has an STD or STD symptoms, such as unusual pain, discharge with odor, burning during urination, or bleeding between periods.
